ARTICLE: What math do students need to know before entering college?

AB 1705 is about to fully go into effect.

I hear you snoring already. Talking about legislation is very rarely interesting. But this time it is very relevant to all students who think they may go to a community college after high school.

According to AB 1705, the lowest math course that can be offered a student with a declared STEM focus is…get this…CALCULUS. Yup. This means it is incumbent upon every high school to create math pathways that acknowledge this reality.

Unfortunately, too often, students are literally counseled out of taking math courses beyond the bare minimum. This is especially true for students planning on going to a community college after high school.

The Intersegmental Committee of the Academic Senates (ICAS), which includes faculty leaders from the California Community Colleges (CCC), California State University (CSU), and University of California (UC) systems has created a list of the fundamental mathematical knowledge and skills necessary for entering college students to perform well in their postsecondary studies. It also offers recommendations for college-prep mathematics coursework based on the student’s intended college major.

High schools would do well to create pathways of math courses to prepare their students accordingly. Also, high school counselors should guide students to take ADDITIONAL math courses beyond the bare minimum.
