Let’s all be bad together

Folks, I saw this posted on Twitter the other day. It hit me hard.

As a mathematics instructional coach my ENTIRE JOB is to support teachers try something for the first time; a number talk, Counting Collections, Bansho lesson, etc.

But we have been brainwashed into thinking we have to be experts at whatever we do in our classroom.

As a result, this creates a barrier to trying new things like #CountingCollections or #BuildingThinkingClassrooms. How can I do something for the first time in my classroom and be bad at it if I am also supposed to be an expert???

Here is my thought for the week…as trivial as it may be: We need to see ourselves as expert LEARNERS of new things.

“Bad” is momentary.

Call your MCOE Math coordinator. Invite him or her into your room to support you as you try something new. Embrace learning.

Let’s all be bad at something together.
