Jamboard is one of my favorite tools for teaching mathematics…especially when it comes to distance learning. I will often use three or four Jamboards throughout the math lesson I am teaching.
My instructional flow goes something like this:
- Teach a small concept
- Collaborate
- Share a Jamboard with ten identical slides (because I will have 10 breakout rooms)
- Randomly send students to breakout rooms with 3 students per room
- The breakout room number indicates which Jamboard slide students will collaborate on
- Students will spend a few minutes collaborating on the one or two problems
- Debrief… We return to the main room to debrief the experience
- Repeat Steps 1 though 3
Depending on the concept I am teaching, we might do this 3-step cycle two to four times during a lesson!
What are the benefits?
- Students learn skills in bite-sized nuggets
- Students will experience frequent transitions (teach → collaborate → debrief) to keep things interesting
- Frequent opportunities to collaborate with other students
- Increases engagement
