Gavin Newsom signed\u00a0<span class=\"c7 c11\"><a class=\"c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id%3D202120220AB1705&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1738086851549164&amp;usg=AOvVaw2t0FOY2pc6DAyd_lgmSHtz\">Assembly Bill 1705<\/a><\/span>\u00a0which\u00a0<em><strong><span class=\"c5\">would have<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0fully phased in by Fall, 2025. AB 1705\u00a0<em><strong><span class=\"c5\">would have<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0created rules that mostly prevent colleges from offering remedial courses such as Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. Essentially, AB 1705\u00a0<em><strong><span class=\"c5\">would have<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0made Calculus the lowest possible course for students with a STEM-related academic goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c2\">Are you noticing the\u00a0<em><span class=\"c6\">would haves<\/span><\/em>? Well, that is because on December 10, 2024 community colleges received a\u00a0<span class=\"c7 c11\"><a class=\"c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/18sPU-Kg5JkCZvtzTtMA3D9rfjVp6jC6e\/view?usp%3Dsharing&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1738086851549509&amp;usg=AOvVaw0rZYO8henvtggcYAIXqWTY\">memo<\/a><\/span>\u00a0called\u00a0<span class=\"c6\">Updated Guidance for Placement and Enrollment for Students in STEM Programs<\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0which allows community colleges to continue enrolling students in a two-semester sequence at transfer-level prior to Calculus, such as Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c2\"><span class=\"c1\">So this means students with a STEM-related academic goal may take math courses lower than Calculus. At least for now\u2026because the memo states community colleges should continue working towards a goal of making Calculus the entry-level course for students with a STEM-related academic goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c2\"><span class=\"c1\">In the meantime, how might schools in Merced County support students for the eventual possibility of AB 1705 finally becoming reality? Let&#8217;s acknowledge two things:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"c12 lst-kix_zi7advbjof0g-0 start\" start=\"1\">\n<li class=\"c0 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">We have room to grow<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">We have the capability and the capacity to improve.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2 class=\"c2\"><span class=\"c1\">Room to Grow<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"c2\"><img title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXd5P6c3DArtPZTo7Lw1lpeO68mE8v3EnqJnWgeAFW6qCtS6whbem9a_RQmhHgMOKfF_Uk6L674w2qhr7Ou2nrv1b5-WFGulRqnkbrZfjpO__D9deH7jzcKR4_BSih4QbWMXdAF_tA?key=VaUaqW60cwpa34D0C_o0zLD5\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c2\">As a county, we are making slow-but-steady progress in the years since COVID. We have room to grow, however, because we see that many of our students are leaving our K-12 system needing to take remedial math and English classes at the community college. Those students often get stuck in those classes and are\u00a0<span class=\"c7 c11\"><a class=\"c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/publication\/strengthening-californias-transfer-pathway\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1738086851550224&amp;usg=AOvVaw3JV_3HbKJrxzHfL2PcFb3p\">virtually certain<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0to NOT finish their degrees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c2\"><span class=\"c1\">We have the capability and capacity to improve<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"c2\"><span class=\"c1\">There are several things within our sphere of influence that we can do to improve student outcomes. In no particular order<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"c12 lst-kix_kpastxlthjyr-0 start\" start=\"1\">\n<li class=\"c0 li-bullet-0\">Increase the percentage of\u00a0<span class=\"c7 c11\"><a class=\"c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/justequations.org\/resource\/branching-out-designing-high-school-math-pathways-for-equity&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1738086851550544&amp;usg=AOvVaw2WwTJ5320yHMdQQsBs-ZzI\">students taking more than the state minimum<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0two years of mathematics in grades 9 to 12.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 li-bullet-0\">Adopt\u00a0<span class=\"c7 c11\"><a class=\"c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1oNXSDkkqHKPHT4378tsixbhMVYW5dG1K\/view?usp%3Ddrive_link&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1738086851550680&amp;usg=AOvVaw0_Ka570XUMaEZH7SlbWTCh\">high-quality instructional materials<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 li-bullet-0\">Support strong instruction through\u00a0<span class=\"c7 c11\"><a class=\"c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/theothermath.com\/index.php\/2025\/01\/14\/supporting-hqim-with-cbpl\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1738086851550807&amp;usg=AOvVaw3Rszuhn-dlIA0aAXemIC7a\">curriculum-based professional learning<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 li-bullet-0\">Fully implement the suggestions found in the revised \u00a0<span class=\"c7\"><a class=\"c8\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cde.ca.gov\/ci\/ma\/cf\/&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1738086851550909&amp;usg=AOvVaw29bbNUpT9i9QivQl71Ms-_\">2023 California Mathematics Framework<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">.
