We were in agreement that it seems students today are profoundly different from students in the past\u2026or at least how we remember them being in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">Compared to the &#8220;good old days&#8221;, the teachers felt students\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">are coming to their respective grade levels less prepared than in the past;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">have less tolerance for productive struggle;<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">do not collaborate as well<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">are less able to concentrate for any length of time<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">\u2026and the list continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">With students seemingly transformed overnight (really\u2026over the course of a pandemic), it is understandable that teachers are left wondering what the heck happened? Why are the instructional strategies we have been using for the past decades suddenly not working with students nowadays?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">What is a teacher to do?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">In this blog post, I will share how one teacher has embraced the <em><strong>Three Dimensions of Systemic Change<\/strong><\/em> that support mathematics instruction found in Chapter 2 of the California Mathematics Framework; and how the students in her classroom have been transformed into engaged mathematicians\u2026literally over night. As a result, she has created an equitable and engaging classrooms that has increased student achievement and given her a new joy for teaching mathematics..<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">Three Dimensions of Systemic Change that \u00a0Support Math Instruction<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">The three dimensions of systemic change that support math achievement in the new CA Math Framework are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">An Assets-Based Approach to Instruction<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">Active Student Engagement Through Investigation and Connection<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">Instruction That Centers Cultural and Personal Relevance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdXO8CzEX6hJHsNI_ZslCG2E_8jdvsIenLAMTqpdZmOm5pIAkGSIKCUJvasZbEgNUdQZWVtN9AxzpQFSaMGz-jMJqaa5LmFqsvKdRTk1WgILHOuRaTkqlUBKrKZgbbuNNS5Bwlf?key=tYe_ShY0Z5XapvAKZJDILsgg\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"292\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">Let&#8217;s briefly dig into each one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\"><em><strong>An Assets-Based Approach to Instruction<\/strong><\/em>: This dimension emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing students&#8217; existing skills, experiences, and cultural backgrounds as assets to build upon in mathematics instruction. An assets-based approach to instruction acknowledges that students enter the classroom on Day 1 with funds of knowledge that can be utilized to support learning mathematics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\"><em><strong>Active Student Engagement Through Investigation and Connection<\/strong><\/em>: This dimension focuses on fostering active student engagement by encouraging investigation and making connections in mathematics learning. By engaging students in meaningful mathematical tasks that relate to their lives and interests, educators can promote deeper understanding and interest in math.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\"><em><strong>Instruction That Centers Cultural and Personal Relevance<\/strong><\/em>: This dimension highlights the significance of centering instruction on cultural and personal relevance to reflect the diversity of California&#8217;s student population. We can make math instruction culturally relevant and personally meaningful through two simple changes in the daily word problems used for instruction: use students&#8217; names and incorporate their interests in the word problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">These three dimensions of systemic change in the CA Math Framework aim to provide educators with the tools and strategies needed to promote equity, engagement, and meaningful learning experiences in mathematics instruction, ultimately supporting students in achieving math proficiency and success.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">What changes did the teacher make?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">Let&#8217;s first start by acknowledging where the teacher began. Largely, her teaching strategy could largely be summarized as &#8220;I do, You do, We do&#8221;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfiuGFlll4nrDqh8RVk01RRS5_BRzhVq9tdjsKV6Cr7ZSYsjQ9CYRVQUJwbIxp5UtMBNet9a8yb7IFn1iRg8fAuhIwjJAQ0M04fNbNlErNOhRItFrbt8TjzRgQXAGH_x_jHgaLbZA?key=tYe_ShY0Z5XapvAKZJDILsgg\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"189\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">She discovered that this script as her primary form of instruction was simply not as effective as it used to be. Despite her working harder than ever, she was getting fewer and fewer good results.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">Through work with the Merced COE Math Team she was introduced to a different instructional script for her math lessons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcyNOFG2EwQ_AhSSJ-EQDbS8JpI7mNwNEK56k70LxyJ-YYBdbt-MDnRk6TaN4QmhvsjVsONv_1LHbpzXjEvhSdBG_35lNCqAV-tlmQE12iZOSsSHks9zMk36XetlAGd4SsaIJ0clQ?key=tYe_ShY0Z5XapvAKZJDILsgg\" alt=\"\" width=\"478\" height=\"196\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">The teacher begins by giving students a story problem to work on using any strategy. Students begin with one or two minutes of pure silence to work on the problem independently before the teacher invites them to continue working on the problem with a partner. While students are working on the problem, the teacher strategically selects and sequences two or three students who will share their strategies. Then the teacher leads the class through a discussion as the two or three students share their thinking. The class is invited to compare and contrast the methods that have been shared on the whiteboard.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">How does this new script improve student morale and achievement? <\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">It honors the THREE DIMENSIONS OF SYSTEMIC CHANGE.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\">By giving the story problem FIRST for students to work on prior to instruction, the teacher is honoring the\u00a0<em><strong><span class=\"c8\">assets<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0students already have. In effect, she is saying to her students, &#8220;I trust you to use whatever knowledge you already possess to attack this problem.&#8221; The surprising thing is that students do not have to successfully solve the problem to derive the benefit of assets-based instruction. In this\u00a0<span class=\"c5\"><a class=\"c4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/0B1rMdLby1poGX0xLcFdQTHhDRWc\/view?usp%3Dsharing&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1731471665832297&amp;usg=AOvVaw31SNk-eVhm_-DCCzJPQGd7\">study<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">, students who were given an opportunity to invent their own understanding learned better regardless of whether or not they were successful in their attempt to invent their understanding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\">Because students in this new instructional script are not merely mimicking the teacher&#8217;s explanation, students are\u00a0<em><strong><span class=\"c8\">actively engaged<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0in the process of investigating their own understanding and making connections with math concepts they have previously learned. The teacher has noticed that students are freed of the shackles of &#8220;follow the teacher&#8221; and instead engage in the actual\u00a0<span class=\"c5\"><a class=\"c4\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cde.ca.gov\/be\/st\/ss\/mathpractices.asp&amp;sa=D&amp;source=editors&amp;ust=1731471665832934&amp;usg=AOvVaw1cbxA0xQcyJcHs6FYYNNli\">standards for mathematical practice<\/a><\/span><span class=\"c1\">\u2026they are mathematicians! During class discussions, students compare and contrast each other&#8217;s strategies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\">The teacher is able to elevate\u00a0<em><strong><span class=\"c8\">cultural and personal relevance<\/span><\/strong><\/em><span class=\"c1\">\u00a0simply by selecting a word problem from the lesson in the textbook and rewriting it to include students&#8217; names and their interests. No more bland textbook problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><em><span class=\"c1\">Original problem:\u00a0 <\/span><\/em><span class=\"c1\">There are 4 boxes with 6 binders in each one. Three brothers share the binders. How many binders does each brother get?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\"><em>New problem:<\/em>\u00a0 <\/span><span class=\"c1\">There are 4 boxes with 6 cookies in each one. Stasha, Martin, and Diego share the cookies equally. How many cookies does each student get?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">So what are the discrete steps for teaching in this way?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ol class=\"c3 lst-kix_tixsc0ps1b71-0 start\" start=\"1\">\n<li class=\"c0 c7 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Introduce the story problem to students<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 c7 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Students work independently on the problem at their desks.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"c3 lst-kix_tixsc0ps1b71-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Students may use manipulatives, pictures, and\/or number sentences to represent the problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">While students are working, teacher \u201cteaches between the seats\u201d to support students as needed<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">(REMEMBER: it is not important for every student to be successful with this problem.)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol class=\"c3 lst-kix_tixsc0ps1b71-0\" start=\"3\">\n<li class=\"c0 c7 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Select two or three students to share their thinking.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"c3 lst-kix_tixsc0ps1b71-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Strategically sequence the order in which the two or three students will share.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Arrange the student solution methods from left to right on the whiteboard.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Allow the class some time to compare and contrast between the various solution methods<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol class=\"c3 lst-kix_tixsc0ps1b71-0\" start=\"4\">\n<li class=\"c0 c7 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">The teacher now teaches a mini-lesson to show students what they will try to do in the NEXT problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"c3 lst-kix_tixsc0ps1b71-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Connect the student-generated solution methods to the lesson objective<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Be explicit about what you want students to try on the next problem.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol class=\"c3 lst-kix_tixsc0ps1b71-0\" start=\"5\">\n<li class=\"c0 c7 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">Introduce Problem #2 for students to work on.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"c3 lst-kix_tixsc0ps1b71-1 start\">\n<li class=\"c0 c6 li-bullet-0\"><span class=\"c1\">This cycle continues for Problem #2 and possibly Problem #3 (if needed):<br \/>\nIntroduce problem \u2192 Students work independently \u2192 Students share \u2192 Teach mini-lesson<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"c0\"><img title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXeK5hcLaZwZlFqyHaiBe-pnkaVSIM84i4WGuKiaSYUhxjw6fGcRdof8M-GdL_RVddIk1VtGxuHvcw8KcUGOQK55-of-iOJplCkMhp_jP-7itytIa8MGYLkALj96q6VqNNuBoLXqmQ?key=tYe_ShY0Z5XapvAKZJDILsgg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c0\"><span class=\"c1\">To be clear, there are still days in which &#8220;I do, You do, We do&#8221; might be the preferred instructional script.
