Here was the task\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdFumsWh3FjoxQKqnlPB64iNqDAcR1drbrD0ENFv1425Xpd8U-164RnOtkCtlPjvkI0gRp0qITIx1IIG8Kq4jIGgEZ3EJc6QufICXomn2_5XG1e2uS1VMTODxp89plpp3KCGnkTu5zhVINW1ros5DisGmiG?key=SHMi0Fc2cVw3ySJ1CpJEJg\" alt=\"\" width=\"448\" height=\"252\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c2\">At first, we asked students to simply sort the decimals from least to greatest in order to identify the largest decimal. There was no consensus about which is the largest decimal with three of the four decimals receiving votes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcVUjrsaUzy2kmo1ufI9VjnGaPAiAHox_D2KbD4_uh-0VRnag-VnopOJ-_CJNm2PSD6OA7uIrj8tWpQo1ZtPOu6D025ZHGOObpjGxXujEUFFg-Mkq3752uZAs-LdR8u8Q8PfZ1c1tUKJnMr-jbz_7mgbZrY?key=SHMi0Fc2cVw3ySJ1CpJEJg\" alt=\"\" width=\"526\" height=\"90\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c2\">Groups were given an additional minute to construct an argument to defend their answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c2\">Student S was called to defend his answer of 0.63.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c2\">He added zeros to make all the decimals as thousandths and reasoned 630 thousandths is the largest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXfo2_M5gzCp4TNHP38pWWXYi69nJAvFiuIdIJHbFJWHG2juBlHO-o1ne_lzYGTg05R2uUwezDGKPYz65Nq_nBITA8sB4vysvbVRKOotUa0I41Om24KAWdVAvXOTDA6GbmW76k8Jlu8m2Pp9uJS2KiKL6_c?key=SHMi0Fc2cVw3ySJ1CpJEJg\" alt=\"\" width=\"523\" height=\"230\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c2\">While this type of reasoning will ALWAYS work, this strategy \u00a0essentially avoids having to think about decimals by turning the numbers into whole numbers (ish). Additional students added upon the thinking of Student S until we had absolute unanimity about the proper order from least to greatest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c2\">So in our next task, we used the same decimals but asked students to place them on a number line. They were given 0.5 as a benchmark value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXcfTOJvUjuajufjU_2F2vlfeDjJjHj5ZKDUg7kP4h4xmslj8iEWQ_QIZB2PgSfNAypgyF7wkO-pMEH387c-d83cISAHi1nxShtMu-lGjTRTWyn-bhYCl__k5wgU9LM5CHwURCBLdcGSGdp6SJEY8zbSHirJ?key=SHMi0Fc2cVw3ySJ1CpJEJg\" alt=\"\" width=\"576\" height=\"131\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c2\">While every group placed the decimals on the number line in the correct order, the decimals themselves were not remotely close to where they actually live on the line. Their placement looked something like this\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/lh7-rt.googleusercontent.com\/docsz\/AD_4nXdOQB00uB3jejIK-XyHckwY2C8NJ24EBbEEGnx7M6YkMW2-baGjWFSGwh3oqqUyML2taZAKoRfciMi43E3xaIkwgHwwuupyy_iHAwQjNLIjpebo3JspRqefO7CUJBRZ_pj71NGGUHD0db9frmbWVM3o4c8g?key=SHMi0Fc2cVw3ySJ1CpJEJg\" alt=\"\" width=\"583\" height=\"175\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"c1\"><span class=\"c2\">For Task 2 we gave students a set of four decimals (no context\u2026just numbers) and told them to place those decimals on a number line from 0 to 1.
